Eccentric billionaire Elon Musk has put the stamp of his electric vehicle empire on a prominent spot in the Montrose business scene.
Though it’s not a dealership, a new Tesla service station will give EV owners a place to charge and maintain their rides at the site of the former Toys R Us store.
Tesla representatives could not be reached for comment, and an opening date has not been announced. But signs are now on display at 52 S. Springside Dr.
Loudan Klein, the director of economic development for Copley, noted the service center is “already working through a lot of interior improvements” to the building.
This is one of the latest businesses to open in the Montrose area in the past couple of years. This commercial hub has seen growth despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to information from Copley Township, Tesla is making about a $750,000 investment in the building.
New Montrose Tesla facility is nearly 30,700 square feet
The building is 30,629 square feet, including a concrete loading dock, on 2.79 acres. Interior improvements are to include a 20,886 square foot primary service floor area with 10 vehicle bays. Other improvements include a wash area, storage space and a customer lounge.
There are four other Tesla-branded operations currently open in Ohio, in Cincinnati, Lyndhurst, Columbus and Toledo.

According to a review written July 30 last year by the Copley Township Department of Community and Economic Development, several temporary tenants occupied the Toys R Us building after it closed in 2018, but the space had been vacant for a couple of years.
“The permanent location of a Tesla Center will be welcome addition to the area,” the review said, noting the large building’s location in a highly traveled commercial corridor.
Toys R Us and Babies R Us shuttered their stores across the United States and other countries in 2018, although a handful have since reopened.
